Kashmir Pashmina is now a geographical indication

There are reports (see here, here and here) that the Indian government recently issued a geographic indication for pashmina shawls.

Under this new GI, only pashmina shawls produced in the Kashmir valley that adhere to one of two specifications can be identified as Kashmir Pashmina. Those specifications are:

1. The shawl is entirely handmade and dyed using vegetable colours; and

2. The shawl is made with specific mechanical processes and dyed using vegetable and/or artificial dyes.

What makes this new GI noteworthy is that this appears to be the first GI issued for a clothing item, as most GIs are for food and beverage products. Whether this GI will be recognized by other countries remains to be seen.
