Century 21 sues Rogers and Zoocasa, alleging data scraping, copyright infringement

The National Post reports that Century 21 Canada has sued Zoocasa Inc. and its majority owner, Rogers Communications, for alleged copyright infringement. The allegations have not been proved in court.

Zoocasa operates a Canadian residential real estate website which allows users to search for homes not only by physical features, but also by amenities such as schools and retailers. The Zoocasa website links the search results to the listing realtor’s website.

Century 21 Canada’s Statement of Claim alleges that the defendants engaged in data scraping, using photographs and property descriptions from  Century 21 British Columbia real estate listings without permission. Century 21 also wants Zoocasa to seek permission prior to hyperlinking to any real estate listings on Century 21 broker’s websites.
